Superior Gearbox Company began in 1976 as a subsidiary of a large Midwest tooling and special machine manufacturing company. Our first product was a small gearbox aimed at the grain handling industry. The original premise was to manufacture split case gearboxes with no machining and no adjustments, through the use of close tolerance die cast housings. However, the necessarily close tolerances required extreme care in the casting process and nearly constant die maintenance. Even then, proper bearing adjustment and gear lash were difficult to achieve consistently. In order to keep the advantage inherent in the split case design and maintain a competitive price, it was necessary to develop special close tolerance, high production machining methods. With help from our parent company these methods were developed and adapted to a wide range of products. In 1980 Superior Gearbox Company moved from Lebanon, Missouri to its present home in Stockton, Missouri. The ready labor supply, work ethics of the people, central location, and mild climate have made our location a big advantage. Our separation from Detroit Tool in 1986 has enabled us to devote all of our resources to the development and marketing of power transmission products. With a constant increase in sales, it was necessary to expand. In 1994 we acquired a 74,000 square foot facility in Buffalo, Missouri.
